Description
Rocket is the common name applied to two closely related but botanically distinct leafy vegetables in the mustard family (Brassicaceae): annual garden rocket (Eruca sativa), also called salad rocket or arugula, and perennial wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia), also called perennial wall rocket or wild arugula. Both are cultivated for their pungent, peppery-flavoured leaves and are used in much the same way in salads and cooking, but they belong to different genera and differ significantly in their life cycle, growth habit, leaf form, flowers and cultivation.
Annual Garden Rocket (Eruca sativa)
Annual garden rocket is the familiar fast-growing rocket commonly raised from seed as a cool-season leafy vegetable. It completes its life cycle within a single growing season, progressing from germination through vegetative growth, flowering and seed production. In mild conditions plants may remain productive for an extended period, but once flowering and seed production are complete the plants naturally die.
The plant has an upright to loosely spreading growth habit and typically reaches around 20–40 cm (8–16 in) in height when grown for leaves, although flowering stems can grow considerably taller. The stems are slender, green to slightly reddish and become increasingly elongated as the plant matures. Warm temperatures and increasing day length encourage rapid stem elongation and flowering, commonly referred to as bolting.
Leaves are arranged alternately along the stems and vary considerably in shape according to their age and cultivar. Young leaves may be relatively broad, oval or spatulate, while mature leaves become more strongly lobed or pinnately divided, producing the jagged appearance characteristic of rocket. The leaves are generally medium to dark green, relatively thin-textured, and may range from smooth to slightly rough. They contain glucosinolates and their breakdown products, which are responsible for much of rocket’s characteristic mustard-like pungency.
When allowed to flower, annual garden rocket produces the four-petalled flowers characteristic of the Brassicaceae family. The flowers are generally creamy white, pale yellow or yellowish-white and are conspicuously marked with purple or violet veins. They are borne in loose clusters on elongated flowering stems above the foliage.
After pollination, the flowers develop into elongated seed pods known botanically as siliques. These contain numerous small seeds and progressively dry as they mature. Plants readily produce viable seed when allowed to complete their life cycle, making it possible to collect seed for later sowing or allow plants to self-sow in suitable garden conditions.
Because annual garden rocket grows rapidly but eventually bolts and completes its life cycle, it is commonly grown as a succession crop. Small batches can be sown at intervals to provide a continuous supply of young leaves rather than relying on individual plants to remain productive indefinitely.
Perennial Wild Rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia)
Perennial wild rocket is a different plant rather than simply a perennial variety of annual garden rocket. It belongs to the genus Diplotaxis rather than Eruca and develops a persistent perennial root system that allows established plants to survive beyond a single growing season and repeatedly produce new shoots and leaves.
The plant grows as an erect, branching perennial herb, generally around 20–80 cm (8–31 in) tall when mature. It develops a substantial taproot, which enables established plants to obtain water from deeper soil layers and contributes to their ability to persist through comparatively dry conditions. Plants can produce new vegetative growth from the persistent crown and root system after leaves and stems have been harvested or seasonal conditions have restricted above-ground growth.
The leaves are alternate and typically narrower than those of annual garden rocket. They vary considerably in form but are commonly deeply lobed or pinnately divided, sometimes with narrow segments that give the foliage a more finely cut appearance. The species name tenuifolia refers to its characteristically narrow leaves. The foliage has a strong mustard-like aroma and flavour when crushed or eaten and is generally regarded as more intensely flavoured than the softer leaves of annual garden rocket.
Perennial wild rocket can also be distinguished readily when flowering. Instead of the pale, purple-veined flowers characteristic of annual garden rocket, it produces conspicuous bright yellow, four-petalled flowers on branching flowering stems. These are followed by long, narrow seed pods containing numerous seeds.
Although perennial wild rocket survives for more than one growing season, its foliage does not necessarily remain continuously lush throughout the year. Growth varies with temperature, moisture and other environmental conditions, and established plants can produce renewed vegetative growth when favourable conditions return. Repeated harvesting is therefore possible from the same established plants, in contrast with annual garden rocket, which ultimately flowers, sets seed and dies.
Research comparing the two crops has demonstrated that their differences extend beyond life span and appearance. They differ in seed size and germination responses, growth patterns, response to temperature and performance following repeated harvests. Perennial wild rocket can maintain productive regrowth through successive harvests, whereas annual garden rocket is naturally adapted to a much shorter crop cycle.
Wild rocket is more persistent than annual garden rocket because it is a perennial with a well-developed root system and crown that can produce new growth after harvesting or periods of unfavourable conditions. Once established, plants can remain productive for several years and may also self-seed if allowed to flower and mature seed. In suitable climates it can escape cultivation and become naturalised in disturbed ground, roadsides and agricultural land.
The distinction between the two types is important when following growing advice. Annual garden rocket (Eruca sativa) is best treated as a rapidly growing cool-season annual that is repeatedly resown, whereas perennial wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) can be maintained as an established perennial plant and harvested repeatedly over successive growing seasons. Unless specifically stated otherwise, the sowing times, spacing, harvesting intervals and other growing information in this guide refer to annual garden rocket.
